Ottawa Mehr Group History

The word "Mehr" (مهر) in Farsi means kindness, a value that has been at the heart of our charity since its inception. Ottawa Mehr Group began its fundraising activities in 2015, sparked by a simple idea during a book club gathering. Realizing a shared passion for helping others, the group decided to turn their next meeting into a small fundraiser. Each member contributed homemade food or pastries, and the proceeds were used to provide books, stationery, and clothing for underprivileged children in Iran through a trusted charity organization.

Over time, the group expanded its reach, supporting not just children’s education but also broader community needs. After the pandemic, Ottawa Mehr Group resumed its bake sales, famous kabab sales, and food deliveries, continuing its mission of kindness and support for those in need.

Before COVID-19, fundraising was done through social gatherings, food sales at a Persian community center in Kanata, and garage sales. When the pandemic disrupted in-person events, a few dedicated members continued fundraising by cooking and delivering food. Soon, home-based caterers joined in, and Chelochi Restaurant generously provided meals at reduced prices, sometimes even for free.
